Detailed write-up about the project, challenges, and solutions
I built this project as a campus-first marketplace, but designed it to scale beyond students to local sellers, micro-businesses, and growing online brands. The goal was to solve common informal-commerce problems: scattered orders, weak payment trust, and poor post-purchase visibility.
The platform supports complete commerce operations from product discovery to payment and order management, with architecture ready for wider market adoption.
Who it serves:
1. Student sellers and campus buyers.
2. Small local businesses needing a simple online storefront.
3. Growing merchants who need secure payments and reliable order workflows.
Core capabilities:
1. Product browsing, cart, and checkout.
2. Secure Paystack payment integration.
3. Guest cart with merge after login.
4. Order history and detailed order tracking.
5. Admin-ready management structure for operations.
Key engineering challenges solved:
1. Payment retry failures:
Introduced fresh transaction references for retries to prevent initialization conflicts.
2. Cart continuity:
Implemented guest-to-user cart merge to avoid losing selected items after authentication.
3. Reliable order visuals:
Stored image snapshots on order items and added robust fallback logic for display consistency.
